The sixth meeting of the GAP Salon took place on Wednesday, 9 April at 6:30PM. An online discussion forum and details of future meetings can be found at the GAP Salon Facebook group. Please join the group or email us for location details.
Returning to our regular Salon format after a flurry of activity around International Women’s Day, we recapped our March events: the WOW Party, Bite the Apple, and our group trip to see The Mistress Contract at the Royal Court.
We asked everyone to introduce themselves around the room, and answer the question, “What are you here for? What do you want out of this group?” Some members were concerned about the representation of women in our wider culture, and how theatre can help to shift that. Others were keen to open up more opportunities for women onstage and behind the scenes. Some were looking for allies, and cross-pollination between similar organisations. A few expressed a need for a supportive community for the artistic or advocacy work, for a hit of energy, and for the boldness to tackle these issues outside of the Salon.
Possible future programmes from the suggestion box: skill share events; writing/acting scene nights; “book club” for plays; cross-gender Shakespeare workshops.
If you haven’t been to a Salon yet, let us know what you’re looking for. All are welcome, and our flexible agenda responds to the people in the room. Meetings are typically about half and half familiar faces and new friends.
One major priority for the Salon moving forward is to actively reach out into more diverse communities and welcome many perspectives into our group. Please get in touch if you are interested in helping with this outreach effort.
We are also looking for venue partners to host the GAP Salon once a month, once a quarter, once a year, or just once…
As always, the Salon ended with an invitation to share projects that our members are working on:
- Kubrick 3 at New Diorama Theatre, 15-19 April
- All the Rage Theatre’s Seize the Stage at RichMix 19 April
- To Freedom’s Cause – Emily Davison Statue in Parliament Campaign (ongoing #emilymatters)
- SPEAK at the Theatre Making Place (ongoing open creative workshops)
- The Helen Project at Stand-Up Tragedy June 12 and Lost Theatre July 11 &13
Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, 13th May. Details to come via the GAP Salon Facebook group. As always, you are welcome, and feel free to bring any interested parties.
